If you’re thinking about getting a SodaStream, one of your top questions is likely – Is it worth it?
A starter kit for a SodaStream’s lead expensive model is $119 on Amazon. So it’s not a cheap kitchen appliance that you’ll just buy on a whim. (At least it wasn’t for me!)
Answering the question, is it worth it, depends on WHY you want to buy a SodaStream? Are you looking to save money from buying bottled and canned soda waters? Or are you looking to cut an unhealthy soda habit and replace it with homemade sparkling water? Or, are you even thinking of the added benefit of being more eco-friendly and cutting down on plastic and aluminim waste?
These are all factors that can help you figure out if a SodaStream is worth it for you. But, first let’s look at the top question – is a SodaStream worth it financially?
Does a SodaSTream Save Money?
This depends on your current soda habits.
I was drinking a lot of name brand flavored soda water, specifically Spindrift. At our local grocery store, it costs $4.99 for an 8 pack. (La Croix is typically about $4.29 for an 8 pack at our grocery store, though it’s often on sale and cheaper.)
Time to do some math.
Each soda cost me $0.62. I would drink about 2 soda’s per day. That’s spending $37 per month on soda!
(In reality, our house spends even more than that. This calculation is just for one person. My partner also drinks about 2 sodas a day so we’re really spending closer to $70/month on soda!)
Next Question –
How long does a SodaStream C02 canister last?
A 60L canister can typically carbonate about 60 liters of water. This does vary depending on how much carbonation you add to your water. We’ve found that we go through a canister about once a month when we’re using our SodaStream daily.
When you convert those liters to fluid ounces that’s equivalent to 169 cans of 12 fluid ounce sodas!
How much is a SodaStream canister?
A SodaStream canister costs $30 if you buy a new one at Target or Bed, Bath & Beyond. But if you also return your old canister, you get a $15 credit.
When I add this all up, I’m estimating that I’m saving $22 a month using a SodaStream!
Buying Soda | $0.62 per soda | $37 per month |
SodaStream | $15 per CO2 refill | $15 per month |
TOTAL SAVINGS | $22 per month using my SodaStream |
This means it would only take me about 5 months to pay for my SodaStream. After that, I’m just saving money!
If you’re wondering if it will last long enough to be worth it, I can tell you mine has! We’ve had ours for over 2 years without a problem.
Other SodaStream Benefits
In addition to the savings, you may be wondering if a SodaStream is worth it based on other factors?
If you’re trying to cut an unhealthy soda habit, absolutely a Sodastream is a great way to start making healthy sodas! You know exactly what’s going into it. I typically just add a squeeze of lime or lemon to my soda water.
Also consider the convenience of a SodaStream. You always have a soda on hand! It’s nice to not lug cases of soda home from the grocery store.
Lastly, one of the other benefits that’s often overlooked is the environmental savings. Your CO2 canisters are refilled & recycled. You’re no longer creating extra plastic or metal waste from store bought bottles & cans of soda water. If you’re looking to minimize the amount of trash you create without giving up a soda habit, a SodaStream is a great choice.
Whether or not a soda maker is the right choice for you depends on a lot of factors. If you currently buy generic bottles of soda water, you might not save money.
Overall, for me a SodaStream has definitely been worth it!
